The Hexagon Sweater Revisited

I have finally written my notes up for my version of the Hexagon Sweater.
Sue's Hexagon Baby Sweater

Materials: sport weight yarn
(I used Lion Brand Baby Soft) and an F hook

Ch 6, join yarn with a sl st to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 3 (count as 1st dc), 2 dc in ring, *ch 2, 3 dc in ring, repeat from * 4 times, ch 1, hdc into top of beg ch 3 (6 sets of 3 dc).

Round 2: ch 3, dc in same space, *dc in each dc, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in ch 2 space, repeat from * 4 times, dc in each dc, 2dc in ch 2 sp, ch 1, hdc in top of ch 3.

Rounds 3 - 12: Repeat round 2

At the end of round 2 fasten off. Make a second hexagon leaving abut a yard of yarn for use in stitching.

Sew the 2 hexagons together along one side and then fold the "wrinkled bathmat" to us an Elizabeth Zimmermann phrase into a sweater. The seam you just sewed is the center back. The tops of the sleeves will be open. Refer to the link of the original for pictures.

Sew the top of sleeve seams from the cuff edge to 3 1/2 inches from each front edge.

Collar
Join yarn with a sl st at the front neck edge, ch 3, dc in same st, dc in each st to shoulder seam, *dc dec over next 2 sts, dc in next 5 sts, rep from * to next shoulder seam, dc in each st to neck edge, 2 dc in top of turning ch.

Row 2: Turn, ch 3, dc in same st, dc in each st across, 2 dc in last st.

Rows 3 - 5: Repeat row 2

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Cuffs
Join yarn with sl st at the underarm edge (directly below the shoulder when the sleeve is folded flat). Ch 3, dc in next 4 dc, * dc dec over next 2 sts, dc in next 5 sts, repeat around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch 3.

Round 2: Repeat round 1

Round 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st in beg ch, fasten off, weave in ends.

Repeat for other sleeve.

Edging
join yarn with sl st at neck edge, just below collar. Ch 1, sc in same st, *ch 3, sk 1 st, sc in next st (button loop made), sc in next 10 sts, repeat from * 3 times, sc in last dc, 2 sc, ch 2, 2 dc in corner ch loop, dc in each st all the way around the bottom edge to other front corner, 5 dc in corner ch loop, dc in each st up front (for button band) to neck edge, ch 1, turn, sc in each st down front and across back ending at bottom front corner. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Sew buttons on button band opposite button loops.

I hope that this is clear and easy to follow. If anyone finds any mistakes, please let me know. Thank you.

  7. I made this jacket yesterday for my great-niece for Easter. I absolutely LOVE it. I have made the other pattern -- with holes -- several times and this is my new favorite. Thanks for sharing it with us.

  8. Cozy's Corner: I made this hexagon sweater using large hook and worsted wt yarn. You can see the results on Ravelry. I am emmalemmon47 and I am new to Ravelry so have no idea how to tell you to see it because I have it on my projects. Your sweater was so adorable and my grandkids are older. Please take the info from my projects and add to yours as it is all your work except for the color change, the hook size and the yarn size. Thank you so much for that pattern Iloved making it and will do it again soon. Linda G, emmalemmon47

  11. I love this! I wish I'd seen this pattern when I had babies to crochet for. Do you know if there's any way to adjust the pattern to make it into an adult pattern? Make the hexagon bigger and/or use a bigger hook?

    Thanks for sharing!

  13. Hi again. I shared my hexagon cardigan linking on to your pattern on my blog and I have recieved a lot of nice comments on it. Your pattern was even published on Monsterarkivet.
Also I have a few requests on translating your pattern to Swedish for my Swedish readers. Would that be okay for you? It is after all your pattern and I will of course link on to your blog again.

    Thanks again for sharing.

  15. Just wondering what size this would fit? New Born? 6 months?

    It's an excellent pattern!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Thank you so much! It works out to be about 3-6 months, depending on the baby.

  17. hi
great pattern. jus started today,my hex is turning out all ruffly not flat after 3 rounds!! what am i doing wrong?

    pls advise
    thks

  18. The hexagon will be "ruffly" until you fold it to create the sweater. Each hexagon folds into an "L" shape. Then you sew the 2 pieces together.

  22. hi. i love this pattern, but i'm having trouble finding the link to which you refer to for step-by-step pics...can you show me the way?

    thanks

  23. Hi Marchesa,
I took down the link because the woman who originally posted the pictures removed them. I'm so sorry. I have never taken any pictures of the process. I probably should.

  25. Wow! I eally like this sweater, wish I could crochet. Can the pattern be translated for knitting?

    Wanda

  26. Hi Wanda,Thank you so very much. There is a knitted sweater very much like this one. It is called the Baby Surprise Sweater and the pattern was written by Elizabeth Zimmermann and is available through School House Press.

  27. I just finished my my first sweater with your pattern, and am so pleased with how it turned out! I used lots of scrap sport-weight yarns, so it is really colorful. Wish I could show you a picture.

Thanks so much for sharing your talent with us!!

  28. i made one of these sweaters with the granny square pattern. but i can't seem to get the hexagon to fall in place (bit shorter on one end) are there any errupdates on this pattern? i notice that the end of row 2 it says to put 2 dc in ch2 sp and ch1 ending with a hdc at the top of the ch3. is this the way it's suppose to end? it seems like its missing a group of 2dc. 0_o

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm not sure why you are having a problem. The reason it says only 2dc, ch1, hdc and then fasten is because the other 2 dc were done at the beginning of the round as a ch 3, dc. So you are actually fastening at the corner. If one side of your hexagon is short, you must have missed a stitch or two along the line making that one side short. Sometimes I need to count the sts along each side of the round to make sure I didn't miss one somewhere. I am sorry you are having trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I used slip sts to get to the ch2 space instead of the hdc. I made it work. Thanks. It came out really nice. Made it with a soft pink with a cream white. Thanks for sharing the pattern.

  31. Hi
It's really very pretty. I just want to know whether we can make it for toddlers ? How can we increase the pattern ? Plzzz Help.
    Thnx

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm sorry that it has taken me so long to get back to you. I think if you make up the pattern as written in worsted weight yarn with an H hook you should get close to a toddler size.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hi there! I'm still somewhat a beginner and having a real difficult time with ending/starting a row. I can't tell if I'm doing it correctly (and the "holes" are supposed to look a little differently on that part) or if I'm not reading the pattern correctly. I would *love* if you or anybody had a video/photos of just that step.

    ReplyDelete
  34. That is a really good idea. I really like pictures myself. I will have to check that out and see what I can do. Thank you for your input. I am glad that you like the sweater.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I just had a question! I was looking to alter this pattern so it would fit my son. I would need to alter to fit a 12 month size. Does anybody know how to do that with this pattern?

  36. Hi, I need some help clarifying the round 2 instructions. Where it says "*dc in each dc, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in ch 2 space", where are the 2 dc before the ch 2 going? How many dc's total should I have at the end of round 2? Thanks for the clarification!

    ReplyDelete
  37. The (2dc, ch2, 2dc) all go into the ch2 space of the previous round to make the corner. I hope this helps.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hi BabyBumBum,
Other people have made up the pattern with worsted weight yarn and a larger hook to get a larger size.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Making this now, I'm hoping less rows will work out for newborn sized as I'm due a boy in July :-) it looks great so far, thank you for sharing the pattern x

  40. I love this pattern -- it's great-looking, ingenious, and fun to crochet. I'm making this sweater a grandchild due in a few weeks and would like to crochet larger versions as the child grows. Do you have suggestions about adapting this adorable pattern for toddlers and older kids? (PS: This is my first blog post ever.)

  44. Hi. Love this sweater. Have completed the hexagons and cannot figure out how to put together. Is there anyone or anyplace I can find this out. Many thanks, Susan F.

  45. Thanks for this sweater construction... I can hardly wait to get started on it!

  46. A beautiful unique sweater indeed. I like it much. I already started making it for my new born nephew. But I'm a bit confused about 2 points; ending the round in hdc (a slip stitch won't do?), and making first dc of the following round in the same place (what place? I'm lost :( )
When I did both steps as I understood, the first side of the hexagon (the one with which each new round start) increased much in dc numbers than the rest of the sides!!! I must be doing something wrong :(
Could you help me with that?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hi Noha, you make the first double crochet of round 2 over the half double crochet you made to end the previous round. The reason for doing it this way is that you will always begin and end a round at the center of the corner making a very neat join.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hi, it's a fabulous unique sweater indeed. I like it much. I started crocheting it for my new born nephew, but I messed up :(
Two things are confusing me, the hdc ending every round (won't a sl st do?), and the first dc of every new round being made in the "same place" after the chain 3 ( what same place do you mean?). When I followed these steps the first side by which we start each new round increased in number of dc!! It's not equal in number to the rest of sides. I must be doing something wrong but I don't know what is it. Could you help please?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Thank you so much for your help :)

  50. Is there anyway to convert this pattern to fit 0-3 months? Should i just use a smaller hook?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hi Shayna, a smaller hook would be a good start. You could probably use fingering yarn with a smaller hook as well. You could also try making fewer rounds on each piece. Good luck!

  56. Love this pattern! Never did a hexagon sweater in all my 40 years crocheting! I am half done and thinking of adding a hood! Thank You for the freebie!

  57. YOU WROTE: Sew the 2 hexagons together along one side

    one side = 1/6?
    one side = 2/3?
    one side = 1/2?

    thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  58. It really doesn't matter since both hexagons are identical. Just sew any 2 sides together.

  59. Wonderful, creative baby hexagon sweater pattern. I used a G-hook and Hobbii Twister for a 12- month size, and finished with crab stitch for the button band. Perfect! Thank you for sharing!
